Daniel Scruggs
Sports Photographer – Endurance & Professional Athletics
Freelance sports photographer available for championship and professional event coverage.
I’m a sports photographer specializing in endurance sports and professional athletics, with 15 years of experience covering cycling, triathlon, trail running, and team sports across the United States.
My work spans credentialed professional team environments to international championship events. I've served as official photographer for the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A Baseball) and Memphis 901 FC (USL Championship), delivering same-day social media content and next-day edited galleries for game action, behind-the-scenes moments, and team documentation.
I've covered major national and international competitions including the 2022 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Fayetteville, USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals, and the Ed Murphy Classic featuring Olympic and elite track athletes. My regional work includes official photographer roles for the Gateway Cup cycling series and Memphis-area triathlon and ultra-running events.

Approach
I was made for this. My approach to sports photography is rooted in a lifelong obsession with sport and competition. I grew up playing soccer from age four, coaching youth competitively for several years, and consuming every sport I could—reading about the sports I from around the world, consuming everything sports because I love the achievements, the stories, and being able to see the complete range of everything that makes us human. My obsession and passion are the foundation that taught me to read the flow of play and anticipate decisive moments before they unfold.
Whether it's a breakaway attack in a criterium, positioning for a double play, or the chaos of a cyclocross crash, I combine my technical skill with a deep understanding of how athletes think and how competition develops.
I'm deeply versatile across sports. My 15-year portfolio spans cycling, triathlon, running, soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball, football, and CrossFit—but what drives me is the challenge of capturing new sports I've never photographed before. I want to shoot Olympic sports, rugby, Australian rules football, squash, handball, rodeo, and equestrian events, and to elevate my coverage of familiar sports to their highest levels—international soccer, Major League Baseball, elite professional cycling.

Workflow & Data Security
I’m equipped to handle most assignments with my owned kit and experienced working with rented premium glass when events require specialized focal lengths. If your organization provides equipment or budgets for rentals, I’m proficient with top-tier Sony telephotos and can adapt to assignment-specific gear needs.
For multi-photographer event teams, I can provide not only camera equipment but also complete post-production infrastructure—portable NAS for centralized file management, editing workstations, and licensed professional software. This allows event organizers to build efficient on-site editing teams without sourcing separate technical systems.
I use portable NAS systems for on-site backup and secure file transfer, minimizing the risk of data loss during multi-day events or remote location coverage.
